The FIFA World Cup final is the pinnacle of international football, where history is written and legends are born. Since the inaugural tournament in 1930, all 22 World Cup finals through 2022 have produced unforgettable moments—dramatic comebacks, iconic goals, heartbreaking defeats and penalty shootout triumphs that have captivated millions of fans around the globe.
1930 FIFA World Cup: Uruguay Become the First World Champions
The first-ever FIFA World Cup final was played on 30 July 1930 at Estadio Centenario in Montevideo, Uruguay. Hosts Uruguay defeated Argentina 4-2 to become the inaugural world champions. Argentina led 2-1 at halftime, but Uruguay mounted a remarkable second-half comeback under captain José Nasazzi. Argentina finished as runners-up.
1934 FIFA World Cup: Italy’s First World Title
Italy won their first FIFA World Cup by defeating Czechoslovakia 2-1 after extra time in Rome. Czechoslovakia opened the scoring, but Italy equalized before Angelo Schiavio netted the winning goal in extra time. It was the first World Cup final to be decided in extra time. Czechoslovakia were runners-up.
1938 FIFA World Cup: Italy Retain the Trophy
Italy successfully defended their title by beating Hungary 4-2 in the final held in France. Silvio Piola scored twice as Italy became the first nation to win consecutive World Cups. Hungary finished as runners-up.
1950 FIFA World Cup: The ‘Maracanazo’
One of football’s greatest upsets took place at the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. Uruguay defeated Brazil 2-1 in front of nearly 200,000 spectators to claim their second World Cup. Brazil needed only a draw, but Alcides Ghiggia’s decisive goal stunned the home crowd. The match became forever known as the “Maracanazo.” Brazil finished as runners-up.
1954 FIFA World Cup: The Miracle of Bern
The final in Switzerland is remembered as the “Miracle of Bern.” Hungary raced into a 2-0 lead within eight minutes, but West Germany produced an extraordinary comeback to win 3-2. Helmut Rahn scored the decisive goal in one of football’s most famous finals. Hungary were runners-up.
1958 FIFA World Cup: Pelé Announces Himself
Brazil claimed their first World Cup by defeating hosts Sweden 5-2. Seventeen-year-old Pelé scored twice and introduced himself to the football world with one of the greatest performances in World Cup history. Sweden finished as runners-up.
1962 FIFA World Cup: Brazil Defend Their Crown
Brazil retained the World Cup by beating Czechoslovakia 3-1 in Chile. Although Pelé missed much of the tournament due to injury, Garrincha and Amarildo inspired Brazil to consecutive titles. Czechoslovakia were runners-up.
1966 FIFA World Cup: England’s Only Triumph
England won their first and only FIFA World Cup by defeating West Germany 4-2 after extra time at Wembley Stadium. Geoff Hurst scored the only hat-trick ever recorded in a World Cup final, while his controversial second goal remains one of football’s most debated moments. West Germany finished as runners-up.
1970 FIFA World Cup: Brazil’s Greatest Team
Brazil defeated Italy 4-1 in Mexico to win their third World Cup. Featuring Pelé, Jairzinho, Tostão and Carlos Alberto, the team is widely regarded as one of the greatest in football history. Carlos Alberto’s stunning team goal remains an all-time classic. Italy were runners-up.
1974 FIFA World Cup: Total Football Falls Short
The Netherlands took an early lead through a penalty, but hosts West Germany came back to win 2-1 under captain Franz Beckenbauer. Johan Cruyff’s famous “Total Football” philosophy fell just short of World Cup glory. The Netherlands finished as runners-up.
1978 FIFA World Cup: Argentina’s First World Title
Hosts Argentina defeated the Netherlands 3-1 after extra time to lift their first FIFA World Cup. Mario Kempes scored twice, while the Dutch were unlucky to see a late effort strike the post before extra time. The Netherlands were runners-up.
1982 FIFA World Cup: Italy’s Revival
Italy defeated West Germany 3-1 in Spain to secure their third World Cup title. Paolo Rossi starred throughout the tournament, winning both the Golden Boot and the Golden Ball. West Germany finished as runners-up.
1986 FIFA World Cup: Maradona’s Tournament
Argentina defeated West Germany 3-2 to win their second World Cup. Although Diego Maradona did not score in the final, his extraordinary performances throughout the tournament inspired Argentina to the title. West Germany were runners-up.
1990 FIFA World Cup: Germany Get Their Revenge
West Germany avenged their 1986 final defeat by beating Argentina 1-0 thanks to Andreas Brehme’s late penalty. Argentina had two players sent off, making it one of the most controversial World Cup finals. Argentina finished as runners-up.
1994 FIFA World Cup: The First Penalty Shootout Final
Brazil and Italy played out a goalless draw after 120 minutes in the United States. Brazil won the first-ever World Cup final decided by penalties after Roberto Baggio famously missed the decisive spot kick, securing Brazil’s fourth world title. Italy were runners-up.
1998 FIFA World Cup: France’s Historic Breakthrough
Hosts France defeated Brazil 3-0 to lift their first FIFA World Cup. Zinedine Zidane scored twice with headers, while Ronaldo’s mysterious illness before kickoff became one of football’s biggest talking points. Brazil finished as runners-up.
2002 FIFA World Cup: Ronaldo’s Redemption
Brazil defeated Germany 2-0 in Japan and South Korea to win a record fifth World Cup. Ronaldo scored both goals, completing one of football’s greatest comeback stories after recovering from serious injury. Germany were runners-up.
2006 FIFA World Cup: Zidane’s Dramatic Farewell
Italy defeated France on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Berlin. The match is best remembered for Zinedine Zidane’s infamous headbutt on Marco Materazzi, which resulted in a red card in his final professional match. France finished as runners-up.
2010 FIFA World Cup: Spain’s First World Cup
Spain won their maiden World Cup by defeating the Netherlands 1-0 after extra time in South Africa. Andrés Iniesta scored the decisive goal, sealing Spain’s place in football history. The Netherlands were runners-up.
2014 FIFA World Cup: Germany’s Fourth Crown
Germany defeated Argentina 1-0 after extra time in Brazil. Substitute Mario Götze scored the winning goal to secure Germany’s fourth FIFA World Cup title. Argentina finished as runners-up.
2018 FIFA World Cup: France Win Again
France defeated Croatia 4-2 in Moscow to claim their second World Cup title. Kylian Mbappé became only the second teenager to score in a World Cup final, further cementing his status as one of football’s brightest stars. Croatia were runners-up.
2022 FIFA World Cup: Arguably the Greatest Final Ever
Many consider the Qatar 2022 final to be the greatest World Cup final in history. Argentina and France drew 3-3 after extra time before Argentina triumphed on penalties. Lionel Messi scored twice, while Kylian Mbappé completed a sensational hat-trick. Argentina lifted their third World Cup, and Messi finally achieved the one major trophy that had eluded him throughout his illustrious career. France finished as runners-up.
